Thermal Drone Night Patrols: What They Can and Cannot See

How thermal cameras help security teams find intruders at night, and the limits buyers should understand.

What thermal shows

Thermal cameras detect heat, so people, vehicles and animals stand out against cooler backgrounds in total darkness. Paired with a zoom camera and spotlight, a drone can find a person hiding in a yard, follow them and guide responders.

Limits

Thermal cannot see through walls or glass, contrast drops on hot nights and after rain, and identifying a face usually needs a visible-light camera and light. Resolution matters: ask for the thermal sensor resolution and sample footage from similar sites.

Night rules

Night flights under Part 107 require anti-collision lighting visible for three statute miles and current pilot training. Ask providers how they manage night operations and whether a visual observer is used.

Reporting

Good providers give you a patrol log, timestamped thermal and visible clips of any incident, and a summary report each morning or after each alarm.
