Drone-in-a-Box for Security: Buyer Guide

How automated docking drones work for patrols and alarm response, and what to check before buying or leasing one.

How it works

A drone-in-a-box system keeps a drone in a weatherproof dock that charges it and launches it on schedule or when an alarm triggers. A remote pilot or monitoring centre supervises flights and the live video. It suits large sites that need frequent, repeatable patrols.

Approvals

Remote and automated operations usually need FAA waivers or exemptions, especially for BVLOS flight without an observer on site. Ask the supplier which approvals they hold, whether they cover your site, and who applies and pays for new ones.

What to compare

Flight time and recharge time, weather rating, camera and thermal quality, spotlight and loudspeaker options, integration with your alarm and video management system, data security, NDAA compliance, installation needs (power, network, siting) and the support model.

Buy, lease or managed service

Some makers only sell hardware; others offer drones as a monthly managed service including monitoring. Calculate total cost over three years including software, maintenance and the people watching the video.
