Counter-Drone and Drone Detection: What Private Sites Can Legally Do

Why private security teams can usually detect drones but not jam, spoof or take them down — and what detection systems offer.

Detection vs mitigation

Drone detection uses RF sensors, radar, cameras and Remote ID receivers to spot drones and, often, locate the pilot. Mitigation means jamming, spoofing, hacking or physically capturing a drone. In the US, mitigation is restricted by federal law to specific authorised federal agencies; private companies, venues and most state and local agencies cannot legally jam or take down a drone.

What private sites can do

Detect and log drone activity, alert security staff, record evidence including Remote ID data, and pass information to law enforcement. Listings tagged "Drone Mitigation (Authorised Agencies)" sell or support systems intended for authorised government users only.

Choosing a detection system

Compare detection range, the drone types and frequencies detected, false-alarm rate, pilot location capability, integration with your video and alarm systems, and whether the system is NDAA / Blue UAS compliant if you have federal work.

Laws in this area are evolving. Confirm current rules with legal counsel and coordinate with local law enforcement before deploying any counter-drone capability.
